26 JANUARY: GOSHAWKS AND OWLS

11:30:  New Fancy View, Dean, Gloucestershire (51.783167, -2.539381)
Superb views of a displaying female goshawk were had, the best in some time, with her enlarged undertail coverts and eyestripe clearly visible at close range.  A juvenile female goshawk also passed.   Searches around the Crabtree Hill area to the north once again proved unproductive for great grey shrike.

13:00:  Wenchford, Dean, Gloucestershire (51.767421, -2.501935)
Dippers appear to have declined in the Forest of Dean since I last engaged with studying territories in 2014 and 2015, however I noted one bird on a classic stretch of river here at Wenchford, not too far from some nest boxes which hopefully will be used.

15:45:  Aust Warth, Severn, Avon (51.594903, -2.633640)
Superb views of three short-eared owls, now a critically endangered UK breeding species, at close range at their wintering site on the rough grasslands bordering the Severn.  Fantastic birds.

    BIG UK LIST

This diary updates my efforts to see as many British birds in the UK as possible in 2018, using IOC taxonomy.  The list itself is viewable at www.bubo.org and will be updated more regularly than this blog.
